The Doom Restoration Story..........as it unfolds...............here
The Doom Painting is seen here in 1997 before the massive restoration work that began in September 2002.  Note that two small portions of the painting (feet and head of Christ) were cleaned by way of experiment.

The painting was monitored for both light and atmosphere over a period of time and the monitoring equipment is clearly seen here.

The feet of Christ is seen here in a close up photo. (image grab from camcorder) The other sample portion cleaned was the face of Christ which is clearly visible in the first picture.

Click this to take you to a detailed 2 megabyte enlargement - be warned it may take a time to download but it IS worth it! The Doom Painting is seen almost completely exposed here in November 2003 apart from some remaining scaffolding.  Once this scaffolding is finally down the architect, Mr Alan Stephan Wright, will have some spot lights fitted to the painting for illumination purposes.  These will, of course, give out light  that will have all  harmful rays filtered out for maximum protection of the painting.

The fully uncovered picture of the Doom can be seen after it was completely unveiled officially on Saturday 11th September 2004 during the Heritage Weekend.

For information on the iconography of the painting see our character map and Flash enabled movie.
